The accidental origin

Around 1500, an unknown typesetter wanted to demonstrate a typeface. He needed text — but real text would make the customer read the words instead of evaluating the type. So he took a passage from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum (45 BC), scrambled the words, and printed the result. The opening — 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit' — has been pasted into design mockups for five centuries.

The choice was clever: Latin uses Roman letters, so the typography looks 'normal' to Western eyes; word lengths and frequencies roughly match English; and almost no one reads Latin fluently, so the placeholder doesn't distract. The original Cicero passage was an ethical discussion of pleasure and pain — irrelevant content for a design mockup.

Why placeholder text matters

When you show a client a design with real, half-finished copy, they read the copy. They suggest word changes. They get distracted from the layout. With Lorem Ipsum, the eye flows over the shapes — letterforms, line height, spacing, contrast — without parsing meaning. You're evaluating the design, not the writing.

There's a counter-argument from content-design practitioners: lorem ipsum lets designers ignore the reality of real content, which is messier and longer than the placeholder. Names of customers might be 30 characters. Product descriptions sprawl across three lines. By the time you swap in real text, the layout breaks. Using realistic-length sample copy ('content-first design') avoids that surprise. The right answer is probably both: ipsum early for typography, real-length samples late for layout testing.

When to use words vs sentences vs paragraphs

Use **words** when you need to fill a specific text element (a button label, a heading, a chip) — pick a word count that matches the realistic length of the final copy.

Use **sentences** for short blocks: card descriptions, list items, microcopy. A typical card has 1-3 sentences.

Use **paragraphs** for body content: blog posts, article previews, email body. A standard paragraph is 3-5 sentences (~50-100 words). Two paragraphs are enough to test 'continued reading' UI like 'read more' links.

Alternatives to Lorem Ipsum

Other placeholder styles exist for when Latin gets boring: Bacon Ipsum (food), Hipster Ipsum (urban-Brooklyn vocabulary), Corporate Ipsum (synergize, leverage, ideate), Skate Ipsum (skateboarding terms), Cupcake Ipsum (sweets). They're amusing but harder to read past — the joke distracts.

Some designers use real famous text in the public domain: the opening of Moby-Dick, Shakespeare sonnets, the Declaration of Independence. The risk is the same as half-finished real copy: the client reads it. For pure-design purposes, plain Lorem Ipsum still works best.
